Genetics Digital Breakout
Students completed a digital breakout to review for their genetics performance final. The review has a total of 7 locks with the first 6 focused on genetics and the final lock focused on cells for a quick review of some key points. This was fun and engaging while still challenging the students. The digital break out can be access here:
Holiday Exam Review
Students completed a 3-day review which consisted of 6 stations related to the 6 units covered during the fall semester. Each station had a handout for that topic that was given a "holiday twist" to make it a bit more festive. Some of the stations also included "elf tasks", in which students took the content to make a creative holiday craft. Students made: plant cell ornaments, cell energy greeting cards, cell division jingles, and transcription/translation wrapping paper. Here are the holiday handouts that were used:
Social Media Fridays
Recently, I have been using Fridays for remediation and extension opportunities for my students. I decided to create a Google Site that students could access throughout the semester to work on assignments to earn extra credit throughout the semester. Students get to use the theme of any social media of their choice to either do a video or post related to the current topic. The videos and posts are all collected via Flipgrid or Google Forms so they are completely private and secure.
Evolution Digital Escape
Students completed a digital escape room as a review for Evolution. The review consisted of 8 locks that must be completed in order and related to the different topics that were covered in the unit. This was an engaging and challenging activity for the students. The escape room can be accessed here:
The escape room was updated to reflect the updated standards. The final lock was also update to reflect biotechnology to be a quick review for students' midterm exam. The updated escape room can be accessed here:
Cells Escape Room
Students went through a series of puzzles (related to Cells) and clues (to provide location for the next clue) to find the missing piece of a plant or animal cell. The classroom was setup like an actual escape room with lights and music that set the atmosphere. Through the various puzzles, students were able to review in an engaging manner. Here are the puzzles that were used:
DNA/RNA Trashketball
Students competed in teams to complete a trasketball review for DNA/RNA. Students got an opportunity to pick a question # and answer that question. Foam basketballs and a trashcan were used to earn bonus points for the team. The review PowerPoint can be accessed here:
Genetics Jenga
This was an enrichment activity to help students review for Mendelian Genetics. Students had Jenga blocks with colored stickers (red, blue, and green) and each color corresponded to a different level of questions and different point value. Here are the Jenga cards:
Classification Whiteboard Review
Students competed in teams but were assessed individually through a whiteboard review. The team with the most individuals with the correct answer won the point. The review PowerPoint can be accessed here:
