Lab Reports

In order to give students practice with lab reports, we wanted to have students write lab reports as part of their biology class but we wanted to scaffold the writing process for them. I created lab report templates that I used to support students. The idea is for them to have use the template while in biology and then be able to write reports without the supports as they move to chemistry and physics. Here are examples of some of the lab reports:

Bacterial Lab Report

Virus Lab Report

Biochemical Evidence Lab Report

Karyotype Lab

Students were given an introduction to Karytypes through a video or through direct instruction and then completed the following  Lab and Check Your Understanding:

Based on their scores, students either completed the following remediation activity or enrichment activity:

Karyotype Remediation

Karyotype Enrichment

Oreo Mitosis Lab

Students were paired up based on a formative assessment from the day before. Students that struggled with material had a shorter post lab and were given a lab challenge instead. Students were in homogeneous pairs, but in the seating arrangement high pairs were alternated with low pairs. Apart from the lab handout, students were also given an oral assessment as when they finished their model, they were required to walk me through mitosis to receive full credit.  Here are the files associated with the lab:

Identifying Organic Compounds

Students tested common foods (solids and liquids) for the presence of organic macromolecules (sugars, starches, and lipids) and then analyzed the results of those. Here are the handouts:
